Green Line Extension Faces Funding Challenges, Local Man Picked to Lead MBTA, Va. Quake Felt in Medford

Good morning, here's five things to know today:

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation and MBTA acknowledged public concerns about the future of the Green Line extension project and said the state remains committed to the effort. But funding is a major obstacle for completing the project, which at the moment is expected to cost $1 billion.

A 5.8 or 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., also struck Washington, D.C. and was felt as far north as New York City, Providence, R.I. and Boston this afternoon. On Twitter and Facebook, dozens of people in eastern Massachusetts reported feeling a one or two small quakes around 2 p.m. that lasted for a few seconds.

Jonathan Davis, who lives in Medford with his wife and two kids, will become the acting MBTA General Manager and MassDOT Rail and Transit Administrator when Richard Davey assumes the role of Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of MassDOT on September 2. 

Sunny and Warm: Highs in the low 80s are expected with sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service. There's a 30 percent chance of rain tomorrow.
