Lt. Governor Announces $2M in State Funding for Medford Square Garage

The state has announced it will appropriate $2 million to help pay for a new parking garage on Governors Avenue.

The city has been selected by the state to receive $2 million in funding to construct a new parking garage on Governors Avenue, Lt. Governor Tim Murray announced in an appearance in Medford Thursday.

"That is condition upon the city council approval," Murray said. "We hope that will happen because $2 million like that doesn't usually hang around and we've already spent the $1 million (on garage design)."

Murray spoke to a crowd of about 50 business people in Medford at a luncheon held by the Chamber of Commerce Thursday at the VFW hall on Mystic Avenue.

The proposed garage would . The state funding comes from the MassWorks Infrastructure Program, which provides grants to municipalities and other public entities for projects that will support economic development and job creation.

After Murray's announcement, Mayor Michael McGlynn said he would work with the council to answer questions they have about the project and its timetable as he seeks approval from the city council to bond the remaining cost.

"This will certainly relieve tremendous pressure...," McGlynn said to Murray. "You are going to be ultimately responsible for that garage."
