The more-than-40-year-old cars, which were put into service from 1979 to 1981, are being replaced by an entirely new fleet of 152 new train cars. About 90 of the old cars were still in use when the shutdown began.

Two of the old cars will be preserved by the Seashore Trolley Museum, in Kennebunkport, Maine.
