UPDATE: Medford High Gym Reopened; Theatre Likely to Open Friday

Facilities deemed safe.

The Medford High School Gym was reopened at 3 p.m. Thursday, school officials said.

Crews continued to clear the roof of snow and ice Thursday afternoon, but the facility was deemed safe enough to be reopened, buildings and grounds Director Paul Edwards said.

The gym has been closed since last Thursday as a precautionary safety measure.

The Caron Theatre, which was also closed, aims to re-open Friday, Edwards said. All Medford Public School roofs have been inspected and are considered safe.

Last week, school officials decided to close the gymnasium until Monday as a precautionary measure while crews worked to remove snow from the roof. Officials again inspected the roof on Tuesday and decided more snow and ice removal work should be done as a precautionary measure, Belson said in an email Wednesday night.

Snow removal work was also done on a portion of the Andrews and the McGlynn Schools, Belson said.

"We took these steps strictly as a proactive measure," Belson said. "There have been no reports to us by the city building inspector, school buildings' mangaer, or our contracted structural engineer that our roofs were in any immediate danger."

A girls varsity basketball game against Austin Prep was relocated to Austin Prep Wendesday night because of the closure.
