Medford to Hold 385th Anniversary Bash in September

Mayor Michael J. McGlynn has announced celebrations marking the 385th anniversary of the settlement of Medford. Founded in 1630, Medford is one of the oldest settlements in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Medford was a leader in the Clipper ship building industry and also manufactured brick and “Medford Rum”. It was incorporated as a city in 1892.

“As you are aware, Community Day, scheduled for May 31st, had to be postponed due to weather conditions. It has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM, behind the Andrews Middle School. All non profits, youth groups, local businesses, MHS sport teams/clubs, and religious and community groups are welcome to host a table and join with as we celebrate Medford’s diversity. The band Overdrive will be performing along with a number of local community groups. There will be various food trucks, a Touch a Truck display, games, visits from the mascots of the Boston Celtics, the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Bruins, and the Lowell Spinners, and kiddie rides and crafts. It is a wonderful way to spend the day with family, friends and neighbors,” said Mayor McGlynn.

The 385th Anniversary Parade will kick off Sunday, September 27, 2015, at 2:00 PM. The Parade starts at Medford High School continues down Winthrop Street, onto High Street to Riverside Avenue, disbanding at Medford City Hall.

“I am hoping that all members of our community will join with us by marching or decorating a float. Community groups, religious organizations, all schools, MHS sport teams/clubs, local businesses, and youth groups/sports are encouraged to take part by marching or designing a float. We plan to have representation from local veteran groups, the military and marching bands from local drum and bugle corps, colleges and high schools. It looks to be a day of pomp and circumstance as well as a way to pay homage to our veterans and Medford’s rich history,” said the Mayor.

Elected officials and candidates may march in the parade for a fee of $100. If an elected official or candidate would like to march in front of a band the fee will be $400. All those interested in the parade, (elected officials/candidates included), should contact Lisa Evangelista at the above email. All marchers must be confirmed by September 15th.
