Medford Man Charged in Fatal Crash on 93

Greg Galanopolous is charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation and two other charges.

A Medford man faces three charges following a fatal accident on I-93 in Wilmington Monday, police said.

Greg Galanopolous, 49, is charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, according to a State Police press release.

One man died and another was seriously injured after the Chevy Van driven by Galanopolous swerved from the southbound passing lane into the middle lane and struck a box truck about 5 p.m. Monday, police said.

The collision caused the truck spin out of control and flip, coming to a rest in the center median near Exit 41, police said. Galanopolous was allegedly speeding at the time of the accident.

Cristian F. Hernandez-Giron, 32, of Central Falls, R.I., a passenger in the truck, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The truck's driver, Luis Gasparico, 25, of Providence, R.I., was also taken to the Lahey Clinic in Burlington and treated for serious injuries, according to the press release.

There were also two passengers in the Chevy van, Ronald Ramirez-Guzman, 28, of Chelsea, who was not injured, and Andreas Matidis, 55, of Malden, who was transported to Lahey Clinic with minor injuries, the press release said.

The van is owned by First Nick Painting Company of Somerville, the press release said.

The crash remains under investigation.

All southbound lanes were closed in the area of the crash for about two hours Monday evening.
