MEDFORD, MA — The City of Medford has released a draft version of its Comprehensive Plan, a document that will help create a roadmap for development and policy over the course of decades, said Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn.

Over the past year, the draft has been shaped by Medford residents, the Steering Committee, and city staff and partners.

Emphasis has been placed on public participation throughout the planning process, but public input is still needed before the plan is finalized this fall, the city said.

The plan engages seven core areas, which will be assessed under the themes of resilience, equity, and health:

  • land use
  • housing
  • economic development
  • history, arts, and cultures
  • open space and recreation
  • public services
  • mobility

The Comprehensive Plan will help guide city staff with policy decisions, future investments, regulatory changes, and ongoing community discussions.

“For too long, critical decisions were made in the City without proper input, guidance or regard for long-term planning and development,” Lungo-Koehn said in a statement. “It was clear that for Medford to grow and thrive, we needed to undertake a comprehensive planning process that incorporated the needs of the community and guided us on a course to a sustainable future. This has been a collaborative process from the start, and before we finalize this roadmap, we want the public to offer their input.”

Medford launched a citywide Comprehensive Master Planning Process on June 9. The entire process is expected to take approximately 12-18 months.
