New Developer Eyes Locust Street Space In Medford

The Hanover Company has proposed a scaled-back project for the Eastern Savings Bank and former Shaw's space.

MEDFORD, MA – A new developer has proposed a scaled-back project for 61 Locust St., the location of an Eastern Savings Bank and the former site of Shaw's Supermarket. The Hanover Company's proposal was accepted by the city council April 3, according to the Medford Transcript.

A previous proposal for the site from property owner Equity One included 490 residential units and retail space. That proposal, approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals in May of 2016, was the subject of a city council appeal that was dismissed by the Massachusetts Land Court earlier this year, the Transcript reported. The council subsequently did not receive funds to appeal the land court's decision.

The new proposal was accepted on the grounds that it be scaled back from the original and receive approval from the Community Development Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals. A public meeting will be scheduled for Hanover to present its full proposal.
