The Massachusetts Institute of Technology faces a hefty fine for improperly packaging hazardous materials that caught fire in a FedEx facility in Medford in 2009. The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a $175,000 fine against MIT for violating Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations, according to the press release from the FAA. A Seattle-bound package containing 33 electronic devices shipped by the institute on Aug. 25, 2009 was flaming and smoking when it passed along a conveyor belt at the FedEx sorting facility on Cabot Road in Medford, according to the release.
Rainy Day: There's a 90 percent chance of rain today, mainly before 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service with highs in the mid-60s. Temperatures will stay in the 60s tomorrow with a 50 percent chance of rain, according to the weather service.

A SWAT team a used a smoke bomb to snuff out a suspect barricaded in an East Somerville apartment Monday night. The unidentified adult male was rushed to Mass General hospital after police, armed with rifles and protected by bullet proof vests, rushed his first level apartment at 56 Broadway about 10 p.m., moments after hostage negotiators coaxed two females from the barricaded unit.
