Stove Fire on Marion Street Put Out Quickly

Box of food stored near beneath stove believed to have started fire.

A fire at 26 Marion St. was put out quickly Friday morning.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke on the first floor of the multi-family South Medford home at about 10:30 a.m., fire officials said. They ran a hose to the kitchen and prevented it from spreading beyond the gas stove, Deputy fire Chief Patrick Ripley said. Fire crews were on scene for about 45 minutes.

The fire is believed to have been started by a box of food stored beneath the stove near the boiler that the occupants had forgotten about, Ripley said. No one was hurt.

A wall behind the stove had to be opened up to ensure the fire didn't spread. The damages are estimated at $3,000, Ripley said.

"There was a lot of smoke on first floor but no real damage," Ripley said.
