Traffic Advisory: Construction at I-93, Salem Street Rotary

Construction on Interstate-93 North of Boston in Medford will narrow the highway to two lanes and cause detours around Salem Street Rotary this weekend.

Construction on I-93 this weekend will narrow the interstate to two lanes from Stoneham to Somerville and cause traffic around the Salem Street rotary in Medford.

Starting at 6 p.m., Salem Street east of I-93 will be open to local traffic only. Brookside Parkway will be closed south of Water Street. Motorists traveling through the intersection of Route 60 (Salem Street) and Route 28 (Fellsway) will be directed to use Fellsway to Riverside Avenue.

Throughout the course of the weekend, traffic on I-93 will be limited to two lanes in each direction over a 6-mile segment between Exit 28 (Sullivan Square) in Somerville and Exit 36 (Montvale Avenue) in Stoneham. Access to and from many of the ramps on I-93 North in this area will be restricted.

The major construction on I-93 will last until 5 a.m. Monday, with additional work continuing during the week. Heavy traffic is expected through the weekend.

Detour Tips
  • Drivers heading to Boston or Cambridge should use Fellsway/Route 28 from exit 33 to exit 29 in Somerville, the MassDOT suggests (See map on right).
  • Local traffic should avoid Salem Street Rotary by using a combination of Water and Oakland Streets, Riverside Avenue and Fellsway, according to the MassDOT (See map on right).

The work is being done at part of "Fast14" an ambitious bridge replacement project where the state plans to replace 14 failing superstructures along I-93 in Medford before Labor Day.
