Vanished Pack of Cigarettes Leads To Screaming Match With Cops, Arrests On College Ave.

An altercation over a pack of cigarettes escalated into a racially-charged conflict with police on Monday, May 4, according to the Somerville Police Department.

Siblings Lamont Daughtery, 24, of Boston, and Angelique Smith, 24, no address listed, have been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Daughtery has also been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon.

At about 3:09 p.m., police say they responded to a report of Daughtery and Smith threatening an elderly man with a knife in front of the Tedeschi convenience store across the street from the College Avenue T stop.

Smith told police she had given the elderly man money to buy her cigarettes, as she was too intoxicated to go into the store herself.

Upon exiting the store, the man said she had never given him any money, and he refused to give her the cigarettes that may or may not have been in his possession at that point. An argument ensued.

Daughtery confessed that he had a knife in his bag, but denied using it to threaten the elderly man. Upon being questioned, the elderly man said he had not seen a knife at any point during their dispute.

Officers asked all parties to leave the scene. The elderly man walked off, and Smith calmed down when asked to do so by police. But authorities say Daughtery continued to make a scene, allegedly yelling, “F@#$ you! I ain’t scared! What’re you gonna do?! I don’t care about Baltimore!”

After repeated refusals to relax and go home, Daughtery continued flailing his arms around, swearing, and generally making people uncomfortable, forcing officers to place him under arrest, they say.

After briefly freeing himself from arresting officers, Daughtery allegedly ran into incoming traffic, causing a handful of cars to slam on their breaks to avoid hitting him on College Avenue. After a short chase, officers were able to drag Daughtery off in handcuffs, they say.

Though initially compliant with police, Smith became increasingly hostile and rambunctious, interfering with police’s attempts to arrest Daughtery, and attracting a crowd of onlookers in the process.

She was also, therefore, arrested and charged with causing a disturbance and resisting arrest.
