Week in Review: Fire in MacDonald Park, Bank Robbery in West Medford, Farmers Market on Move

Here are some of the top recent headlines from around Medford:

Fifty foot flames snapped in 30 miles-per-hour wind as a fire burned about an acre of tall grass in MacDonald Park Wednesday evening. It only took about 25 minutes to contain the fire, but it was difficult to gauge due to high winds, Deputy Fire Chief Steve Howe said Wednesday. An acre of marsh was left barron and black from the fire, which occurred near the banks of the Mystic River and only a couple hundred yards from the State Police Barracks on Route 16.

The Citizens Bank in West Medford was robbed Wednesday afternoon. The robbery occurred about 12:30 p.m., and police were searching for a suspect described as a white male about 6 feet 2 inches with a blue jacket. It was reported as an armed robbery, according to the Medford police log. No one was arrested in connection to the robbery as of Friday.

In line with state results, Mitt Romney won the Republican primary in Medford. Romney received 72 percent of the vote while Rick Santorum received 13 percent, Ron Paul 11 percent and Newt Gingrich 4 percent.

The Medford Farmers Market will return to Medford Square this year after spending the last two seasons in the Whole Foods parking lot on Route 16. The new location will be near the intersection of Riverside Avenue with Clippership Drive.

Joseph Chase was arrested on multiple charges related to possessing unlicensed firearms after a search warrant was executed at his 109 Watervale Road home Wednesday.
