Week in Review: Soccer Coach Let Go, Twins Arrested

About ten Medford High soccer players showed up at last night's city council meeting to seek answers after learning Head Soccer Coach Mike Petrides had been fired.

Team co-captain John Pires addressed the council and described the coach as a mentor who put academics and family ahead of soccer. The team went to the high school and spoke to superintendent Roy Belson Tuesday morning, who told them the decision to let go Petrides was made by high school headmaster Paul Kreuger. The team has a meeting scheduled Monday to speak with him.

John and George Mazzeo, both 30 and from Somerville, were arrested at 3850 Mystic Valley Parkway about 9 p.m. Monday.

George Mazzeo is charged with oustanding warrants for outstanding warrants - assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, shoplifting, negligent operation, disorderly conduct, operating with a suspended license, open container and failure to stop for police. His brother is charged with having an uninsured motor vehicle, operating with a revoked license and operating with a suspended license, according to the police log.

: Jeffrey Smith, 46, pleaded guilty in April to 13 charges alleging he sent a total of 31 letters to predominantly African-American churches, the NAACP and individuals, according to court filings. He could face up to 10 years in federal prison for 11 of the counts and 5 years for the other two. But his attorney is seeking he be admitted to a state hospital instead.

The Metro/Southeast boys lacrosse team kicked off its Bay State Games with a 9-7 win yesterday afternoon on Wentworth Tech's Sweeney Field, thanks in no small part to four goals from Medford High junior Ryan McCarthy and two goals from Medford's John Camara.

The narrow the interstate to two lanes from Stoneham to Somerville and cause traffic around the Salem Street rotary in Medford. The MassDOT advises drivers to try to avoid the area.
