Medford Sons of Italy Plays Role in Howie Winter Extortion Case

The Medford Sons of Italy Hall, at 42 Alfred St., plays a role in an extortion case involving Howie Winter, former boss of the notorious Winter Hill Gang.

Winter, 83, of Millbury, was scheduled to be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court Tuesday morning on extortion charges, according to an announcement from the Middlesex District Attorney's office.

Medford Faces Up To $229K Local Aid Cut in Governor's Proposal

Medford could lose between $204,000 and $229,000 in aid from state government, Mayor Michael McGlynn said, as part of the half-billion worth of cuts that Gov. Deval Patrick proposed on Tuesday, in anticipation of the "fiscal cliff" combined with projected state tax revenues that are more than $500,000 lower than previously expected.
