Council Talks Impact of Law on Transgender Students

Several community members spoke after Medford City Councilor Robert Penta brought up the impact of a new state law that will affect transgender students in Medford Public Schools. Penta expressed concern about how it will impact student privacy, confidentiality and usage of school restroom or changing facilities.

The Medford School Committee will further discuss the issue on Monday at their meeting.

Tournament Play Opens For Three MHS Teams

Medford High School's girls and boys basketball teams and girls hockey team participated in their respective Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association (MIAA) tournaments this week.

Boys basketball lost on the road to Andover in their first round game; girls basketball beat Chelmsford in the preliminary round but lost to top-seeded Lynn English in the first round; girls hockey beat Medway/Ashland in preliminary action and will play Beverly/Danvers in the first round Saturday.

Bates McGrath Named Chamber Citizen of the Year

The Medford Chamber of Commerce recently announced Andrea Bates McGrath has been named the 2013 Chamber Citizen of the Year. McGrath, the president of Bates Insurance Agency on High Street, is the first second-generation recipient. Her father, Dan Bates, won in 1986.
