Beverly Man Robs Melrose Bank Twice In 1 Morning, Arrested: PD

MELROSE, MA — A Beverly man who police said robbed a Main Street bank twice in the same morning was arrested.

Richard Valenti, 32, was arrested and charged with armed robbery with a firearm (subsequent offense.) Police took him into custody after receiving a report of someone matching his description acting suspicious around MelroseWakefield Hospital.

Police said Valenti demanded cash from a teller inside a Bank of America while motioning toward his waist in an apparent reference to possibly having a weapon. Valenti left with the cash, but came back a short time later demanding and receiving more cash before fleeing toward Lebanon Street, according to authorities.

Valenti was found near MelroseWakefield Hospital holding a gray hat filled with cash, police said.

"The quick, attentive and professional response of investigating officers helped us locate and secure a potentially dangerous suspect before anyone was harmed," Chief Mike Lyle in a statement. "I am pleased that we were able to detain and charge this suspect without additional incident."

Valenti is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Malden District Court. The FBI are assisting in the investigation.

"I want to thank the members of the Melrose Police Department for their quick action and professionalism in apprehending the suspect quickly and safely," Melrose Mayor Paul Brodeur said. "They did an outstanding job."
