I fully support Kate Lipper-Garabedian in her re-election to Alderman at Large / City Councilor, and ask that my fellow citizens of Melrose do the same. Many things have impressed me about Kate over the past few years, including the following:
First and foremost, the level of preparation and insight that that she brings to each Board meeting. In preparation for Board meetings, she thoroughly researches each proposed ordinance from the perspective of what other cities and towns are doing – and by doing so establishes a prevailing standard of care that helps the Board incorporate those elements of municipal code that have worked, and those that have not. Just as importantly, this research has often helped the Board gauge what has been acceptable to the public, and what has not. Examples include her research on the proposed changes to the City Charter, the proposed snow removal ordinance, the proposed zoning for marijuana, and her own proposed ordinance on vacant commercial storefronts.

Her participation in Board meetings has been articulate, respectful, and constructive. She quickly learned Board procedure and more importantly earned the respect of her fellow Board members. After one year of service she was appointed Appropriations Chair, where she effectively presided over a number of complex and contentious issues, including the 2019/2020 budget, zoning for marijuana, the rotary at Howard Street, and increasing minimum requirements for affordable housing. As chair, she fosters an open discussion and maintains neutrality, limiting her comments at the end of the discussion to matters of thoroughness as opposed to personal preference. Thoroughness is a consistent theme in her participation.
Outside of the Board, she is actively involved in the community – as a mother and Melrose Public Schools parent, and as a member of community organizations such as the YMCA and Family Room. She maintains an active web-site and social media presence, and sends out comprehensive email newsletters, informing the public of community events and developments at City Hall, and describing her position on issues.

It is equally impressive that she does all of this while maintaining a full-time job as General Counsel to the Massachusetts Secretary of Education and while being a full-time parent.
I have lived in Melrose for over 25 years. Kate brings the energy, experience, and skill that this City needs to move forward in a thoughtful and balanced manner. Please join me in supporting her re-election.
