Melrose Celebrates Incoming Kindergarteners With Welcome Event

Students celebrated last week ahead of their first day of school on Wednesday

MELROSE, MA — Before their scheduled first day of school on Wednesday, local incoming kindergarten students received a welcome celebration last week from Melrose Mayor Paul Brodeur and the Melrose Recreation Department in this year’s iteration of the city’s annual Kindergarten Welcome Party.

Held last Wednesday at Fred Green Field in Melrose, the event aimed to provide a chance for kindergarteners to meet their classmates and principals.

Brodeur handed out t-shirts reading “Melrose High School Class of 2035” in addition to a series of red pins given to incoming kindergarten students dating back to 2008.

“Every year, I look forward to welcoming our kindergarteners and their families,” Brodeur said in a statement following the event.

"The first day of school is always exciting,” he continued. “We also recognize it can be a source of stress for families. Our hope is that by creating an opportunity for positive interactions to take place between incoming kindergarteners, families, and school staff ahead of the first day of school, we can help make this exciting transition smoother for both students and caregivers.”
