Melrose Woman Drives Mercedes Into Route 1 Pizza Shop

There were no serious injuries when the 57-year-old Melrose woman drove through the entrance of Giovanni's Roast Beef & Pizza.

SAUGUS, MA — A 57-year-old Melrose woman crashed her car into a Route 1 pizza early Saturday morning, authorities said.

A spokesperson for Saugus police said officers determined it was likely either human error or mechanical failure that caused the woman's 2016 Mercedes Benz E350 into the entrance of Giovanni's Roast Beef & Pizza. The restaurant is in the Applebee's plaza on Route 1 North.

The crash occurred around 7:22 a.m.; the business was closed and building unoccupied.

The driver, who was not identified, was evaluated at the scene but declined further medical attention. Police said she was not impaired, and no charges were announced.

The business will be closed until structural damage is assessed.
