Which Road in Melrose Needs a Speed Bump?

We asked Patch readers on Facebook what streets they thought needed a speed bump. Find out what your neighbors told us.

Melrose, MA- Over 9,000 fatalities occurred nationally during 2014 due to speeding according to the latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The data also shows a correlation between a driver’s age and the likelihood of a speed-related accident. As the age of a driver increases, their risk of being in an accident decreases. Men are also more likely to be at the wheel during a speeding accident, according to the study.

While the number of speed-related fatalities have continually decreased since 2005, speeding still remains an issue in many of our Patch communities, including Melrose. Readers suggested everything from increased police presence to more stop signs to building less housing to keep traffic at bay.

If you’re frustrated with speeders in a certain part of Melrose, you are in good company. We reached out to readers on Facebook, asking which local road they thought needed a speed bump. Here’s what your neighbors told us:

  • "Everett Street, behind the Lincoln School. People speed down the road, and it's a very residential area, with kids around all the time, because of the school."
  • "Bay State Road along with a flashing "stop" sign at the corner of Damon and Bay State. Somerville has these all over the city and it definitely helps send a clear message to stop! Bay State is a cut through from Saugus and Wakefield so lots of speeding traffic."
  • "East Foster Street, by Main Street and the entrance to the YMCA"
  • "Lincoln St. on both sides of the Sawyer Rd. rise. We almost had them and some how they were shot down by a vocal minority."
  • "Franklin Street could use a few raised crosswalks like the ones in Cambridge."
  • "Perkins Street, coming up from the Fellsway. People fly up this street. They fly down it as well."
  • "Richardson Road on to Marvin! I can't believe how fast people speed down this section!"
  • "Trenton!! One way and people fly down and almost miss the stop sign at Hurd Street."
  • "West Emerson at Wentworth"
  • "Slayton Road without a doubt. Too many rushing up the street for their tee times."
