5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 13

Milford Regional Medical Center has received a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure to expand access for screening for Latina women.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. The state affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded a grant to Milford Regional Medical Center. Under the program, the Breast Center at Milford Regional will work with community partners to improve access to screening and care for Latina women. Funding will support programs to educate families about risk factors and the importance of prevention. Women will receive assistance with scheduling a mammogram, enrollment in health insurance and access to any needed follow-up care.

2. former manager of the Milford Water Company, who is charged with tampering with water samples during the 2009 boil water crisis, is scheduled to begin Monday.

3. The MetroWest Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Concert, at 3 p.m. May 19 at the Massachusetts Bay Community College in Wellesley, will mark the last performance under the name of “MetroWest” as the group will now be merged with a Milford-based organization and called the Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies.

4. Milford Police will increase its enforcement of the state's seatbelt law May 20 to June 2, through the "Click it or Ticket" enforcement program. The effort includes the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s (EOPSS) Highway Safety Division (HSD) and State Police. “As we kick-off the busy summer driving season it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night – no excuses,” said Milford Police Lt. James Falvey. “Our officers are also prepared to ticket drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts."

5. The American Legion Auxiliary will sell poppies over Memorial Day, on May 24-27, at locations including Stop & Shop, Hill Plaza and Shaw's Supermarket.
