Competitive races

School Committee

Incumbents Matthew Zacchilli, Christopher Wilson and Megan Hornberger are back for new terms in 2024. First-time candidate Gregory Allegrezza is also running for a chance to unseat an incumbent. The race has focused on key issues like the budget, the importance of school counselors and building maintenance.

At a March Citizens for Milford candidates forum, Allegrezza raised questions about the number of students in classrooms who don't speak English as a first language, pondering whether there could be a limit on the number of English language learners in classrooms.

"Traditional students suffer because the flow in class is slowed down when [teachers] have to translate into two to three languages," he said.

"Our moral, ethical, legal obligation is to educate all of them," Hornberger said in followup remarks during the forum.

Allegrezza made similar comments during a recent appearance on "That Milford Show," telling host Al Correia that he's "not a huge proponent of diversity is our strength." Allegrezza did not return a request for an interview.

According to state data, Milford has seen a rise in students who are either English language learners (ELL) or whose first language is not English. This school year, there were 258 ELL students, 232 in the 2022-23 school year, 181 in 2021-22 and 156 in 2020-21. There are about 4,400 students total in Milford schools.

Board of Health

Milford Board of Health member Kenneth Evans died in November, leaving a vacant seat on the board. Three candidates are running for the seat in 2024, including registered nurse Diana Haynes, Milford Housing Authority Executive Director Loriann Braza and Milford constable Charles Skaff.

Braza and Haynes (Skaff was unable to attend) spoke at the Citizens for Milford forum. Haynes said a top priority for her would be increasing education about what the health board does — everything from overseeing school nurses to restaurant inspections. Braza agreed, but also said a top issue for her would be bringing back a task force to inspect the conditions in apartments across the town, with a focus on determining whether buildings are overcrowded. The health board oversees occupancy limits in rental units.

Trustees of Vernon Grove

Trustees Charles Skaff (also running for health board) and Michael Lenza are running for reelection in 2024 for three-year terms, although current chair Ronald Gray is not.

A one-year term is also on the ballot. Paul Bosclair, who was one of four to apply to fill a vacancy on the board in 2023, and Milford Youth Commission member Jason Vaz are competing for the seat.
