Shannon Smith, the home-grown holder of the softball strikeout record in Massachusetts, is the Gatorade Player of the Year. Smith has earned that distinction twice before in her high school career. She is expected to attend the University of Kentucky next year, and will play Division 1 softball there. <a href="http://bostonherald.com/sports/high_school/high_school_insider/2013/06/milfords_shannon_smith_named_gatorade_player_of_the" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">For Milford, she struck out 1,154 batters in her career, a state record, according to a report in the Boston Herald.</a> She led the Scarlet Hawks last year to the state Division 1 state title.
