Spirit of Giving: 6 Nonprofits To Support In Milford

Learn about nonprofit organizations helping people (and animals) right in your community for #GivingTuesday.

MILFORD, MA—It's easy to find a charity. Swing a stick and you'll hit some organization, somewhere, raising money for some cause. But many want to keep it truly local, and help the neighbors around you or the charities that operate right in your community.

The season of giving is upon us. After we smash into people with our carts and knock everyone over at the retail stores for Black Friday, and sit online grabbing red hot deals on Cyber Monday, we turn our thoughts to #GivingTuesday.

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season on Nov. 28. Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources, said the organization. skills and experience who work, not just to care for the immediate needs of the patient, but to understand their psychological needs, keep watch for signs of physical abuse/ and or long term illnesses and to keep accurate files on each patient.

Here is a list of six nonprofit organizations operating or helping in Milford. Learn more about them.

  1. Milford Humane Society: an all-volunteer, non-profit, no-kill shelter for stray and abandoned cats. First organized in September 1990 to fill a need in the community, the organization help to care and find homes for the ever-increasing number of homeless cats that exist in the local area.
  2. Evergreen Center: a nonprofit, residential school, serving children and adolescents with Autism or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  3. Daily Bread Food Pantry: Trinity Church was one of the six churches who joined together to found the Daily Bread Food Pantry in 1991. The Pantry is run totally by volunteers and is funded by donations of food and money from local churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals. Food can be left in baskets at the back of the Church each Sunday, or it can be taken directly to the Pantry on Monday evenings between 6-8 p.m. Trinity has a rotating list of volunteers who deliver the food every Monday. Volunteers also help pack the food for clients or supervise on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m.
  4. Spina Bifida Association of Greater New England:organization working to support people with Spina Bifida as they reach for their goals and pursue a more fulfilling life. SBAGNE is a group of parents, adults with Spina Bifida, and dedicated professionals working together to support and encourage families and individuals throughout the Greater New England area. The goal is to enrich the lives of those affected by Spina Bifida through education, parental support, social networking, advocacy and public awareness.
  5. Thanks To Yanks: a non-political 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to support military members, veterans and their families. This organization, founded by Michael Shain in 2006, began with a 9/11 tribute dinner to recognize the sacrifices military families endured in response to the 9/11/01 attack on America.
  6. Children Across America: provides a free alternative to under served families with students in grades K-5, who can't afford a private tutor, or professional tutoring services such as Kaplan or Kumon.
