MILFORD, MA — A sneaker designer from New Balance visited a Milford school to teach and inspire elementary students who had just completed a shoe design project themselves.
Taylor Canby, a design director at the global company, spoke to fifth-grade art students in Lisa Duarte's classes at Woodland Elementary School. Canby told students about his career as a designer and expressed the importance of following your passion.
Canby guided the students through the sneaker design process, the school district said.

The fifth graders got to see how the shoe goes from sketch to final project and look at various sneakers. Some students were even able to try on the shoes that Canby brought.
“My students recently completed a project in which they created their own sneaker brand, using their creativity and interests to design a shoe they might want to wear. The patterns and colors were all very unique and eye-catching!” Duarte said. “To be able to follow that project by meeting with a real-world shoe designer was so important for the kids. It connected the classroom to an actual person and the complicated process involved to create something they might take for granted.”
