Teen Arrested on Felony Breaking and Entering Charge

Milford Police have charged an 18-year-old with trying to enter a homeowner's house.

An 18-year-old faces a felony charge of breaking and entering after she reportedly attempted to enter a home on Lantern Lane while a companion distracted the homeowner.

Keri L. Spear, 18, of 62 Forest St., Milford, was arrested Thursday on a single charge of breaking and entering in the daytime for a felony. She was released on personal recognizance Friday by District Judge Robert Calagione following arraignment in Milford District Court.

According to a police statement filed in court, on June 5, a homeowner said she was getting ready to go to work when she heard her doorbell ring several times. She looked out the window and saw a small red car parked in her driveway, and a young man in his early 20s sitting in the driver's seat.

She left her home and went up to him to ask him if he had rung the doorbell and to ask what he was doing in her driveway, according to the statement filed by Detective Carlos Sousa. The young man told the homeowner he had rung the bell, and explained he was looking for directions to I-495.

While she was speaking to him, she saw a young woman walking from around the back of her house toward the car. She asked the young woman what she was doing in the rear of her house, and the young woman said she was looking for a lost dog.

The young woman got into the car and the pair left, but the victim was able to provide police with the license plate. The car, a Nissan, is registered to Spear's father but the police statement indicated she is known to drive it. The victim identified a photo of her.

According to detectives, the young woman attempted to open the rear sliding door. Police are continuing to investigate the identity of the male driving the car. Before her arrest, Spear gave conflicting information to detectives about what she was doing and who she was with that day.

Spear will next appear in court on July 25 for a pretrial conference.
