The Milford Highway Department is giving away free compost for the garden. What's in it, a reader wants to know.

Compost is kind of like soup. No set recipe.

So what's in that free compost being given away by the Milford Highway Department?

Milford Patch asked Scott Crisafulli, the Milford Highway Surveyor.

He revealed the secret recipe: it's leaves collected in the fall, plus some lime. A worker turns it every month or so, to introduce air and distribute rainfall.

Because the leaf collections contain the occasional piece of trash, the compost pile at the Highway Department has a few bits of non-organic scraps here and there.

"We turn the leave piles once a month and add a little lime a couple times a year," he said, in an email message. "The key is to turn the leaves often."
