Author, Temple Israel Natick Rabbi Harold Kushner Dies At 88

Kushner was a congregational rabbi at Temple Israel for 24 years. He published 14 books, including "When Bad Things Happen to Good People".

CANTON, MA — Rabbi Harold Kushner, a fixture in the Natick Jewish community and a known and frequent author, has died at 88.

Kushner served the Temple Israel Natick as a congregational rabbi for 24 years. He died in hospice care in Canton, Mass., on Friday.

"Our beloved Rabbi Laureate Harold Kushner has passed away. We are grateful for his many years of teaching, friendship, and wisdom," Temple Israel officials wrote on social media.

Obituaries were published in the national media by the likes of NPR and The New York Times. His funeral will be held on Monday at Temple Israel.

Beloved locally, Kushner was also known the world over thanks to his writing. He was the author of 14 published works, including "When Bad Things Happen to Good People".

The book was written after the death of Kushner's first-born child, and follows Kushner as he dove head first into religion to find an explanation for one of life's great tragedies.

Another book, "The Lord is My Shepherd", saw Kushner again diving into theology to explain another tragedy after 9/11.
