NATICK, MA β It's Monday, July 13. Here's what Patch has been covering between MetroWest and Worcester and across Massachusetts today.
It was a sad day for the Natick Common on Monday morning as public works crews began cutting down ash trees infested with the emerald ash borer β the first confirmed appearance of the beetle in the town, according to state records.
The trees being removed on Monday are along the Park Street side of the common. The town discovered the infestation of at least nine trees in the spring, according to WHDH. The town plans to replant the trees in spring 2021.

Boy, 4, Drowns In Southbridge Pool: DA
A 4-year-old boy drowned Sunday afternoon in a private pool in Southbridge, according to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office.
A man was arraigned Monday morning in connection to a stabbing Friday night at the Auburn Mall that left a man with critical injuries. Yohance Jones pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and battery.

MBTA's The Ride Drivers Strike Amid Contract Negotiations
The drivers went on strike Sunday, with several people picketing in Watertown and Everett. Union rep Ray Domkowski said the new contracts cut back health insurance for drivers, a major issue since the drivers are essential workers and have been working with vulnerable populations throughout the pandemic. The Ride is a door-to-door, shared-ride para transit service offered through the MBTA to the elderly, disabled and veterans.
