The Oldest Remain: 1 Cat And 1 Dog Rescued From Hurricane-Torn Areas Need Homes

The oldest of the Puerto Rico dogs, as well as the oldest St. John cat, have been passed over for adoption.

MASSACHUSETTS—Last week, the MSPCA joined other rescue groups across the state to take in animals from St. John and Puerto Rico when they opened their doors to 34 cats and eight dogs.

The MSPCA received hundreds of calls and emails following news of the animals' arrival, and dozens of adopters poured into the MSPCA-Nevins Farm over the weekend, according to a release from the MSPCA.

Seven of the eight dogs-including all of the puppies-have been adopted and 21 cats have also gone home. Twelve of the cats are not yet ready for adoption, as they're in treatment for upper respiratory infections. The Nevins Farm team said it hopes they'll be available in a week or so.

The oldest of the Puerto Rico dogs, as well as the oldest St. John cat, have been passed over for adoption. At 13, "Mila" the dog is "so friendly that she leans against anyone who visits her in hopes their affection will last for hours," said the MSPCA. She adores other dogs and cats, and staffers hope to find a wonderful "retirement" home for her. She lived all of her life in Puerto Rico and not much is known about her beyond what workers and volunteers see: an older dog who just wants a happy and stable final chapter.

"Lovey" is 16 years old and arrived with all the other cats on the flight from St. John.

"She's watched 20+ cats go to new homes over the weekend and the Nevins Farm team hope her new home is right around the corner," said the announcement. "Veterinarians are unable to treat her painful and swollen left eye so it will be surgically removed this week and she'll be available for adoption by the weekend. If readers would like more information about either Mila or Lovey they can email methuenadoptions@mspca.org or visit the adoption center at 400 Broadway in Methuen.
