The Needham Public Health Department would like to thank the numerous youth sports clubs for their work with us on concussion awareness. New Massachusetts regulations require concussion training for sports involving students in grades 6-12 when participating in school sports, but club sports, in which so many of our youth participate, have no such requirement.
Fortunately for the children of Needham, a number of club sports (soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball, softball) as well as the Positive Coaching Alliance have all partnered with us to provide education from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to coaches and parents about concussions and provide a safer environment for our children at play.
We will continue with speaking engagements and disseminating the CDC materials. We ask that people take the time to educate themselves and encourage others to take the free short online training for coaches, parents and athletes at www.cdc.gov/concussion.

A special thank you to Dr. Stephen Epstein, chairman of the Board of Health, and Dr. Alan Stern, Needham school physician, for all their input and assistance with educating our community.
