NEEDHAM, MA – Briarwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center announced the launch of a “prehab” program for area residents about to undergo surgery.

The prehab program allows patients to tour Briarwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, where they may choose to complete post-surgical rehab sessions, get to know Briarwood’s skilled rehabilitation team, create a personalized strength-training and exercise plan with a therapist to get in the best shape before undergoing surgery, and even try out the food offered at the center.

“Undergoing surgery can be extremely stressful,” said Jenny Baldassarre, Administrator at The Briarwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. “Our goal with prehab is to ensure that local residents feel as confident as possible going in to surgery and that they feel completely comfortable with our team and center if they choose to take advantage of our rehabilitation services post-surgery.”

Patients participating in the program are able to schedule up to four complimentary skilled rehabilitation sessions in Briarwood’s gym, featuring the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill. Briarwood is one of only four centers in Massachusetts that offers the AlterG, which uses “unweighting technology” to reduce gravity’s impact, allowing patients to rehabilitate with less pain and impact. This clinically advanced technology is designed to shorten the rehabilitation process and enable a speedier return to the community for individuals who have undergone surgery.

“We are very excited to be able open up our services to the local community through the prehab program,” said Dennis Long, Rehabilitation Manager at Briarwood. “The stronger a person is going into surgery, the greater the chances are that the patient will be able to leave the hospital sooner and have an overall better post-surgical outcome.”
