Cathy Dowd Runs for Needham Select Board

Cathy Dowd, a US government and history teacher at Needham High School, is running for one of the two open seats on the Needham Select Board. The town election is Tuesday, April 11.

“Needham is a well-run town,” Dowd stated. “I hope to help by advancing issues I have supported at Town Meeting, including downtown revitalization, climate action planning, housing affordability, economic development to support education and other town services while keeping tax rates reasonable for homeowners, and continuing work to make Needham a welcoming and inclusive community.”

Cathy and her husband Sean moved to Needham twenty-five years ago and have raised their two daughters in town. Civic engagement has always been important to Dowd. She is an elected Town Meeting member and active in the League of Women Voters at the state and local level. At Needham High School, Cathy spearheaded the Youth Civics Showcase to give students the opportunity to advocate for state and local reforms they feel are important.

Before becoming a teacher, Cathy earned an MBA and worked as a management consultant. “As pragmatist by nature,” Dowd stated, “I am focused on results. It’s important to listen and understand the facts before forming an opinion. There are many aspects to every issue, and progress occurs when everyone works together toward a collaboratively formed goal.”
