Meet the Artist: A Shared Vision

The Needham Merchants Association's "A Chair To Remember" project brings together local artists, businesses and organizations in an effort to draw more people downtown and encourage them to shop local.

Placed throughout downtown Needham, each Adirondack chair has its own theme and was painted by a local artist. The chairs will be auctioned off at an event in September, with proceeds to benefit town beautification projects and local students.

Needham Patch will be profiling some of the artists behind these creations throughout the summer. Today, we chat with Robin Carroll, who with fellow artist Amy Schupler Veaner designed a chair for The Art Emporium.

Why did you decide to participate in this project? I love creative problem solving, and I wanted to be part of the Art Emporiumʼs contribution to the encouragement of art and beauty in Needham.

What was your inspiration for the piece? I thought it would be fun to co-create a design with my artist/friend Needham resident Amy Schupler Veaner and see what emerged. We both had lots of artwork that we had not framed and wanted to use for “something." We wanted to blend our work into a cohesive form. Collage was the perfect vehicle.

Describe your background as an artist: As a child, I painted watercolors sitting on the rocks in Gloucester with my father. When I visited my maternal grandmother, she let me use her art supplies and various materials to make paintings and collages. It was assumed I would go to college for art, which I did, and I continue to study painting with various fine artists.

Amy Veaner and I are both calligraphers, and it was through this shared passion and practice that we met. We have gotten together to make art, and have displayed our work in several joint exhibits. The colorful images and originality of Amyʼs monotypes inspire me to follow my own inner vision.

What is your medium of choice? Pastels are my current favorite medium, probably because I have recently completed several pastel paintings. As pastels are almost pure pigment; the colors can be rich and intense.
