Needham Police Log: Pedestrian Hit-and-Run, Stolen Flat Screens and More

Monday, May 20

  • School Bus 19, which was parked at the Newman Elementary School, had its window broken sometime over the weekend. Police took a report at about 9 a.m., and note that they are not certain whether the damage was intentional or accidental. There was no damage to other busses.
  • At about 9 a.m., police were dispatched to Central Avenue at its intersection with Gould Street, where a woman reported she had been hit by a vehicle while crossing the stret. Fire and rescue transported her to Beth Israel Needham for futher evaluation. Police do not have any other information about the vehicle. 
  • The Needham Public Library reported, at about 5:15 p.m., that a vehicle rear-ended another car as it was leaving the lot. One of the drivers complained of stomach pain and was taken to Beth Israel Needham. Police say there was no damage to either of the vehicles.

  • Police responded to a past larceny of copper downspouts from the Carter Methodist Church on Highland Avenue. According to reports, half of five downspouts were stolen. Police took a report before 2 p.m., and the matter remains under investigation. 
  • A customer and an employee at Banknorth on Highland Avenue were reportedly involved in a disturbance, at about 4:15 p.m. Police determined the matter was civil in nature, and advised them to resolve it through the proper channels.
  • Vandalism reported at Memorial Park, in the men's room at about 5 p.m. There were a substantial number of tags on the bathroom, and a door was taken off of the wall. 
  • Paul Revere Road and Greendale Avenue, crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian reported just after 6 p.m. The pedestrian was taken to Beth Israel Needham with minor injuries. The operator of the vehicle was cited for failing to use care when turning, under a town bylaw. 

Wednesday, May 22

  • Electronic equipment was reportedly taken from several office buildints in the Chestnut Street area overnight. police investigated the businesses at about 6:30 a.m. A second business also on Chestnut Street reported a breaking-and-entering at about 6:45 a.m.
  • Also on Chestnut Street, at about 9:30 a.m., police report that a business contacted them regarding two missing flat-screen TVs. 
  • 6:45 a.m., police were sent to take a report of a hit-and-run vehicle crash, It happened some time between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night and 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. One of the vehicles sustained substantial damage to its left side. Police found no witnesses to the crash, and a report will be filed. 
  • 9 a.m., police arrested and charged Donna Road resident Austin O'Malley, 47, with driving on a revoked license and leaving the scene of a crash. 
  • A Gary Road resident reported a suspicious phone call from a person who claimed to be from Medicare. The caller tried to get personal and financial information from the man, and he contacted police before 5:45 p.m.

  • At about 9:15 a.m., police took a report of a hit-and-run crash in the parking lot at St. Sebastian's School. Police used video surveillance to identify the suspect vehicle, and supplied their information for insurance.
  • 11:30 a.m., a Blake Street resident reported to police that a man took checks from her and made those checks out to himself. Police are investigating the incident. 
  • Pollard Middle School, a resident reported that someone took his bike during school hours. Police are investigating the report, which they received at about 3:#50 p.m.
