Week in Review: Needham Votes in the State Primary; Two People Rescued From Fires

Life gets busy, and Patch certainly understands that. So with that in mind, here are a few stories you might have missed on Needham Patch this week:

1. —The local results of Thursday’s State Primary mirrored statewide numbers as Needham and Massachusetts voters alike chose Democrat Joe Kennedy III and Republican Sean Bielat in the race for Congressman Barney Frank’s Fourth District seat in the Nov. 6 election.
2. —Commuters traveling on 128 South faced backed-up traffic as emergency crews fought a car fire that forced them to temporarily shut down the highway Wednesday evening. Later reports revealed that some Good Samaritans .
3. —A Pine Street resident was able to make it to safety after a fire broke out in the attic of his home early Monday morning, thanks to working smoke detectors that were tied to an alarm system that notified the local fire department.
4. —A Watertown man was arrested for breaking into a Needham home on Saturday, Sept. 1 after he was picked up by police in the area shortly afterward.
5. —Needham will remember 9/11 quietly this year, on the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that shook the nation and took the lives of at least three Needham residents.
6. —Election officials announced Thursday night that won the contested primary for the Governor's Council second district. 
7. —After months of campaigning across a large and district, the pool of Fourth Congressional District candidates has officially been whittled down from six to two. Democrat  and Republican  will be the two names on the November ballot for the Fourth Congressional District, according to reports from the Associated Press.
8. —As students return to school this fall, school cafeterias across America will be doing things a little differently as they prepare to feed “their kids” and strive to meet tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals. Ruth Griffin, director of nutrition services for Needham Public Schools, shares details about the new USDA standards and how they’re being implemented in Needham.
