NEWTON, MA — Two Newton police officers were commended for their role in the Sept. 6 arrest of a mailbox theft suspect.

Newton Police Chief John Carmichael wrote a letter the day after the incident praising Officer Raymond Chieu and Lt. David Tempesta for their help with a sting operation involving the U.S. Postal Inspector and the Office of Inspector General.

The sting operation is a response to increased thefts from mail box depositories, including those in Newton.

According to the letter, Postal Inspector Joseph Gugliotta was watching the mailbox near the Auburndale Post Office during the early morning hours and notified police of suspicious activity consistent with unlawful entry of a postal mail box.

The inspector approached the two men involved, who ran away on foot, Carmichael said. Gugliotta was able to catch one suspect, but the second got into a car and drove away. When Tempesta arrived, he went to help the inspector.

"Lt. Tempesta immediately converged and handcuffed one hand of the suspect, at which time the individual actively resisted arrest," Carmichael wrote.

When Officer Chieu arrived, he was able to help the other officers get the suspect under control and handcuffed.

"I sincerely appreciate the efforts and professionalism demonstrated by Lt.Tempest and Officer Chieu and their quick response in assisting Inspector Gugliotta in the arrest of this suspect,” Carmichael continued. "As such, I commend our officers for a job well done."

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was charged with breaking and entering, receiving stolen property, conspiracy, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and providing a false name during booking.
