5 Things You Need to Know Today: June 30

Lake swimming, a concert celebration, July 4 planning and more.

1. Newton's own "Hack Mechanic" Rob Siegel will be at Newtonville Books today at 2 p.m. to sign copies of his new book "Memoirs of a Hack Mechanic." He'll be reading from his book and signing copies.

2. Crystal Lake opens at 1 p.m. for general swimming on the weekends. Remember your pass gets you into Gath Memorial Pool and Crystal Lake.

3. The New England Spiritual Ensemble will be at the Newton Free Library today at 2 p.m. for a special concert commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. 

4. Are you already looking ahead to July 4? Newton has plenty planned. Check out the schedule of events.

5. For TOMORROW. The summer health clinics are returning to the Newton Free Library. Stop by from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Monday, July 1 for a free blood pressure screening.
