5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 28

A short work/school week begins, free compost, bicycle/pedestrian meeting and more.

1. Back to the work and school. Town offices will reopen during normal hours, trash pickup is delayed one day and students head back to class.

2. It's post-Memorial Day, which means gardening season is afoot. If you have a need for compost, remember that the Rumford Avenue Center has free compost, as available, from the yard waste the Department of Public Works collects throughout the city.

3. Have thoughts and concerns about pedestrian and bicycle traffic in Newton? The Pedestrian/Bicycle Task Force meets today at 7:45 p.m. in the basement cafeteria at Newton City Hall.

4. Farmers' Market. The Newton Indoor Farmers' Market will take place today from 1:30 p.m.-6 p.m. at Hyde Community Center.

5. The School Committee meets tonight at the Education Center. The committee is scheduled to enter Executive Session at 7 p.m. with the public portion of the meeting to begin at 7:30 p.m. Here's the agenda.
