Boston College Police Sgt. Jeffrey Postell's work as a community resource officer earned him recognition as the first Sean Collier Award for Innovations in Community-Oriented Policing.
The award is handed out by the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (MACLEA) and is named for the MIT Police Officer who was slain by the Boston Marathon Bombing suspects.
“Not many things make me speechless, but in this case I was at a loss for words. I have received many awards, honors and other kinds of recognition throughout my career, but this one is different. This is an award named after a young man who had his future cut short, who wanted to do nothing more than to serve honorably and make a difference in his communities through the respect he earned. In essence, everything a police officer should be," Postell said according to a piece in the Boson College Chronicle.
With the help of BC Police Chief John King, Postell has grown the size of the community resource officer program to 27, and also has used social media as a way for the department to communicate with the BC community - particularly students, according to the report.
