City Sports, Century Bank Building Comes Down in Chestnut Hill [Photos]

The City Sports will be reopening in the new building next door and Century Bank will be moving to the new Chestnut Hill Square development.

[Updated 12:20 p.m. with information on the City Sports opening date.]

As one building goes up, another comes down. 

If you travel Route 9 often, you've probably noticed a few new piles of rubble at The Street in Chestnut Hill, as the building that housed City Sports and Century Bank was recently torn down.

The tear-down is just a few doors away from , including a new City Sports location, a Sports Club/LA, Pinkberry and Showcase Super Lux movie theater. 

Century Bank, which closed the Chestnut Hill location in fall 2012, has decided to move its branch to the new Chestnut Hill Square development, which is slated to open in fall 2013.

Once the City Sports/Century Bank lot is cleared up, site owner WS Development  that will include retail space, office space and potentially restaurant space.

WS Development is currently working on a multi-phase rebuilding and renovation of the shopping center, which includes the two new buildings as well as some pedestrian improvements and landscaping additions.

In an interview with Newton Patch earlier this year, WS Development marketing representative Allison Yee said City Sports is aiming to open its new storefront sometime in March. A recent photo gallery on City Sports' Facebook page shows construction coming along both inside and outside the new store.

According to a press release issued Tuesday, March 5, City Sports says it plans to open its Chestnut Hill store on March 16.

Many of the other stores in the new building are also aiming for a March opening; Sports Club/LA posted on its website that its opening date will be Monday, March 11 and Pinkberry also plans to open sometime this month.

Aside from the demolition and new construction, it appears some renovation work has started at the former Rugged Bear location. This storefront will be the future site of a Shake Shack. According to the Shake Shack website, the new Chestnut Hill location is slated to open in late March.
