Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 18

A book signing with Dan Shaughnessy, free counseling and a play at Lasell College.

1. Counseling. For anyone who needs to talk to someone about the recent Boston Marathon bombings, the city of Newton will offer free drop-in counseling today in the City Hall War Memorial from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Counseling will also be offered tomorrow from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Anyone who needs to speak to a counselor but cannot make it to the drop-in hours can contact the city's Health & Human Services Department at 617-796-1420.  

2. 'Francona.' Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy will discuss his latest book "Francona" tonight at the Waban Library Center. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and will include refreshments and a book signing. 

3. Rain barrel deadline. The city is partnering with the Great American Rain Barrel Company in Hyde Park, Mass. to bring Newton residents discounted rain barrels. Deadline to order is April 19 and pickup will be available on Sat., April 27. What's a rain barrel? What can it do? Where can I order? More info is available on the city's website

4. Budget discussion continues. The Newton Board of Aldermen's budget discussion will continue tonight with the Zoning and Planning Committee meeting at 7:45 p.m. in the chamber at City Hall. The committee will discuss budgets for the Inspectional Services and Planning departments as well as Community Preservation Act administration.

5. "Six Characters in Search of an Author." Lasell College will feature a full production of Luigi Pirandello's play, "Six Characters in Search of an Author" tonight at 7 p.m. in the Yamawaki Auditorium. Shows will also be held April 19 at 7 p.m. and April 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
