Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 23

The indoor farmers' market, a forum for potential political candidates and some info on road paving.

1. Road paving. According to the Newton Police Department website, there will be road construction on Needham Street (road grinding) April 21-26 from 8 p.m. - 5 a.m. There will be detours, but motorists should seek alternate routes.

2. Forum for potential/current political candidates. The League of Women Voters of Newton and the Newton Election Commission invite candidates, potential candidates, campaign managers, campaign treasurers and all interested citizens to a workshop that offers practical information and advice about political campaigns. The evening will include a number of panelists, including Newton Patch Editor Melanie Graham! The forum starts at 7 p.m. and will be held at Brigham House, 20 Hartford St., Newton Highlands.

3. Go Lions! The Newton South girls' varsity lacrosse team will host Westford Academy this afternoon in a home match at 4 p.m.

4. Indoor farmers' market. The Newton Indoor Farmers' Market will be open today at the Hyde Community Center from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.

5. Community development awards. The city of Newton will hold the 2013 Housing and Community Development Awards tonight at Mount Ida College. The evening, which starts at 7 p.m., will also include a screening of an original documentary that explores the impact of community development programs on the lives of Newton residents.
