Five Things You Need to Know Today: March 18
Board of Aldermen meet, a special film screening in West Newton and the Superintendent's fiscal 2014 budget presentation.

1. School budget presentation. Superintendent David Fleishman will present the Newton Public Schools' fiscal 2014 budget tonight at 7 p.m. in the Education Center. Stay tuned to Patch for more details and a story on the budget presentation.
2. Board of Aldermen. The Newton Board of Aldermen will meet tonight at 7:45 p.m. in the Aldermanic Chamber at City Hall. The aldermen are expected to vote tonight on a special election date for the Ward 1 alderman-at-large seat. The full reports docket for tonight's meeting is included in the .pdf section to the right.
3. "Life in Stills." The Boston Jewish Film Festival will host a screening of "Life in Stills" tonight at the West Newton Cinema. Film subject Ben Peter (the grandson) will appear in person to talk about the film, which won the 2012 Ophir (Israeli Oscar) for Best Documentary. Tickets are $15 and available at the door. The film starts at 7 p.m.

4. Home Energy Success Stories. Newton resident Rachel White will speak tonight at the Newton Free Library about her experience in curtailing energy use in her 110-year-old home. This free event starts at 7 p.m. and is co-sponsored by Green Decade/Newton as part of the Greening Our Community Series.
5. Wednesday: Public meeting on NSTAR work. The Boston Mayor’s Office and NStar are hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss NStar's installation of a steel cooling circulation pipeline from the Baker Street substation in West Roxbury to Elliot Street in Newton. At this meeting, NStar representatives will present the scope of the project to the community, take feedback and questions. The project is expected to last from April 2013-November 2013. The meeting will be held at the Boston Lodge of Elks #10 (corner of Spring Street and Morrell Street in West Roxbury).
