Five Things You Need to Know Today: March 28
Traffic Council meets, a special program at the library and an open house for the Newton InvenTeam.

1. InvenTeam open house. Students from the Newton InvenTeam will host an open house this evening to showcase their solar-powered pedestrian beacon system. The students, who won a grant from MIT to develop the project, will explain the details behind the system and where it will be used. The open house and fundraiser starts at 5 p.m. and will be held at Newton North.

3. Traffic Council. The Traffic Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in room 222 at City Hall. The council will discuss a number of items, including traffic and parking restrictions for Burr Elementary. The full agenda is available online.

4. Art contest. The Newton Sons of the American Legion Post 440 is seeking student entries for its annual Newton Memorial Day Art Contest. The theme for this year's art contest is titled "Honoring America's Fallen Heroes" and submissions are due to the American Legion Post 440 by Friday, March 29, 2013, according to a press release issued by the Legion. 5. Library program: "Complimentary Lives." Westfield State University's Holly Robbins will lead a discussion tonight on the professional and personal relationship between Samuel E. Courtney and Booker T. Washington. Courtney lived in Newton in 1930. The free program, which is co-sponsored by Historic Newton, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Newton Free Library's Druker Auditorium.
