Five Things You Need to Know Today: March 3

1. Temple Shalom rummage sale. Temple Shalom of Newton will hold a three-day community rummage sale starting today. The sale will run from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. today and tomorrow; Tuesday hours 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. 

2. Free concert. Flutist Vanessa Breault Mulvey and clarinetist Michelle Shoemaker will perform a free concert today at the Newton Free Library at 2 p.m. The two will perform Aria by Jacques Ibert, Chôros No. 2 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Lullaby by Jennifer Higdon, Turnabout by Paul Steinberg and Airheads by Gary Schocker. 

3. Mayor's town hall meetings. Mayor Setti Warren will host two town hall meetings today to discuss the proposed override. The first meeting will be held at Ward Elementary School at 1 p.m. and the second will be held at Lower Falls Community Center at 6 p.m.

4. Playoff games. An update from last night's Newton playoff games: The Newton North boys' basketball team defeated Taunton 69-57 and will now move on to face North Quincy in a semifinal match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at UMass Boston. Meanwhile, the Newton South girls' basketball team continued their playoff run with a 54-42 win over Durfee, bringing them to the South Div. 1 semifinals against Franklin at Massasoit-Brockton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Finally, the Newton North girls' ice hockey team lost to St. Mary's (Lynn) 5-1 last night, finishing their season 12-7-1 overall. 

5. Alexander and the....The Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center will host today at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for members, $13 for nonmembers.
