Hazardous Gas Leak In Newton Discovered By Resident: Report
Newton resident Nathan Phillips measured an explosive level of methane gas in an Eversource electrical manhole, Fig City News reports.
NEWTON, MA – Newton resident Nathan Phillips measured explosive levels of methane gas in an Eversource electrical manhole on Wednesday evening, Fig City News reports.
At around 4:30 p.m., Phillips measured a methane gas level of 6 percent in the manhole located on Homer Street between city hall and the Eversource high voltage substation.
After placing a call to 911, Newton Fire and National Grid responded to the scene. A National Grid technician measured a methane level of 45% and declared the site a hazardous grade 1 leak, Fig City News reports.

Newton Fire Public Information Officer Lt. Michael Bianchi told Patch that crews used a four gas monitor to check the scene and also checked the boiler room at Newton City Hall, where no gas was detected in the meter readings.
"A gas company representative arrived at the scene and cleared the scene," Bianchi said.
