Forty Percent of Newton Voters Participate in Tuesday's Special Elections

Take a look at how Newton voted.

Newton voters overall aligned with the majority of the state Tuesday, overwhelmingly putting their support behind Democratic Senate candidate Edward Markey.

In Newton, the unofficial results show that Markey received 16,345 votes across the city's 32 precincts, while Republican Gabriel Gomez secured just 5,389.

Of the 21,827 total votes cast in the special U.S. senate election, Markey carried 74.2 percent of the vote in Newton.

Ward 5, precinct 4 had the greatest number of voters overall in the Senate election with 963 cast ballots (761 for Markey, 200 for Gomez and 2 for write-in candidates). But Ward 6, precinct 3 cast the greatest number of votes for Markey with 792. 

Gomez secured the greatest support from voters in Ward 8, precinct 1, where 266 votes were cast in his favor.

The third party candidate, Richard Heos, secured just 48 votes across Newton.

A significantly lower number of voters cast ballots in the Ward 1 alderman-at-large election in which candidate Scott Lennon ran unopposed. Lennon secured a total of 12,303 votes.

In all, 40 percent of Newton's 54,783 registered voters headed to the polls Tuesday. That turnout is higher than the turnout for all but one of Newton's six most recent elections. Only the 2012 presidential election attracted more voters at 79 percent.
