Jacob A. Canick, 68, Newton Resident

Jack (Jacob A.) Canick, 68, of Newton passed away on May 19, 2013.

Canick shared 33 years of marriage to Marsha Rogers Canick and was the father of Simon Canick and his wife, Molly, of St. Paul, Minn., and Alex Rogers and his wife, Ana Cristina Rojas, of Ann Arbor, Mich. He also had several grandchildren.

Throughout his career, Canick came to be known as a leading expert in the area of prenatal screening, an expertise that led him to lecture around the world and produce more than 200 scholarly articles, reviews, scientific abstracts and other works. He served as the director of the Division of Medical Screening and Special Testing at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, R.I., and as a professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University.

Funeral services will take place Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel in Brookline with interment Newton Cemetery.

Shiva will take place at his late residence on Tuesday immediately following interment until 6 p.m. and also on Wednesday & Thursday from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his name can be made to the Conservatory Lab Charter School, 25 Arlington Street, Brighton, MA 02135.
